This episode was really amazing. If I have not said it before, Once is one of my favorite dramas. Let's begin...
In fairy tale land...
This is the tale of Belle, but not the beast. Belle is magnificently played by Emilie De Raven (Roswell!) Belle's kingdom is in trouble. There is a war and they have called in Rumple to save their town. In return he wants Belle to come live with him and be his caretaker. Gaston, her to be wed knight, forbids it and so does her father the King. Belle, high on heroism, agrees and goes with Rumple. At first he throws her into a dungeon. Then he lets her clean and she takes down the curtains and shows him the light. She starts to get curious about his background. If she is to only know one person, why not really know him. She asks about the little boy clothes and he says he had a son who he no longer has. Well, if I remember correctly, he does not have his son because he turned evil and didn't take him with him. Even Gaston comes to fight for Belle and Rumple turns him into a flower, a single red rose. Nod to the original fairy tale here. She then chips a coffee cup and another nod to the fairy tale and her good friends the singing dishes and singing Chip the cup and mother teapot.
Rumple asks her to go into town to fetch him some straw. She is surprised he trusts her this much. He tells her that he doesn't think she will come back. On her way there the queen pulls up to her. She starts to talk to her about her master/lover who she can save with true loves kiss. Apparently, this can break any curse. Belle is so giddy about this she kisses Rumple and his face begins to change. Rumple believes that the witch is behind this and yells to Belle not believing that a beauty like her could actually love him. He then locks her away. After finally letting her out, he lets her go. He doesn't want her to be there anymore as a reminder. She gives him a speech about how he could have had love and storms out. He keeps the chipped cup as a reminder of her and smashes everything else in his home. He is alone again.
He meets with the queen soon after, she wants a spell for a mermaid, Arielle soon? She laughs at him for making the only woman who loved him leave and tells him what happened to her. Her father had shunned her after she returned and sent her to a locked tower where she jumped and took her own life. Rumple is crushed and forever will hold this grudge.
Back in storybrook....
It's Valentine's Day! Mary Margaret (Snow White), Ruby (Red Riding Hood) and Ashley (Cinderella) decide to have a girls night since they are all single and Ashley's boyfriend works all the time. Mary Margaret is still having a secret relationship with David. He goes to buy two cards at the store, where Rumple sees him and makes note of this. During girls night, they are all drinking and having a good time. Ashley's boyfriend comes in and proposes to her finally and they are happy. Mary Margaret leaves the bar and runs into David. He gives her a card and it was meant for Kathryn. Uh oh. She does the right thing and breaks it off. I mean, why hasn't he broke it off to begin with?
Meanwhile, Mr. Gold has a nasty run in with an owner of a flower van. The guy is really Belle's father the king. He cannot pay his debts, so Mr. Gold takes his truck from him. His house then gets broken into and he knows who done it. Emma comes to check out the scene and retrieves all of his things for him. He says something is missing. He goes to find the flower guy and beats him senseless, screaming things like "How could you abandon her when she needed you?". Clearly this guy has no idea who he was in the past and just gets beaten silly. Emma breaks it up and arrests Mr. Gold.
Regina has been trying to talk to Mr. Gold all episode. She comes into the police station and tells Emma she can have 30 minutes with Henry so she can talk to the behind bars Mr. Gold. They skip off to have ice-cream and miss the by far best conversation since the showing of the heart chamber when the sheriff dies.
The kicker....
She tells Gold she has one question for him and then she will give back his prized possession. Gold says he will answer and Regina gives him the chipped cup. "What is your name?" she asks. Knowing full well who she is, Rumple says he is Mr Gold in this life. And she asks "what is your name in any other worlds?" and he says "Rumpelstiltskin". Chilling. They may be the only two people who know who they are.
We see Regina going to the hospital, past the banged up King in a wheelchair. She types in a secret code to a keypad to a locked up mental asylum. She asks if anyone has come to see her and she says no. Looks like Belle is locked away, but by Regina. She has no idea who she is, but the evil Queen does. Chilling again.
Truly amazing on how Regina and Mr. Gold have the fate of these characters in their hands. I cant wait to meet more and more characters. Maybe Rumple can finally reunite with Belle and be with her.
